A Legendary Origin
The temple’s history dates back to 1604 CE, when Raja Man Singh I, the ruler of Amber, brought the idol of Shila Mata from Jessore (present-day Bangladesh). Legend has it that the goddess appeared to the Maharaja in a dream, instructing him to retrieve her statue, which was floating in the sea near Jessore. In exchange for the gift of the idol, Man Singh returned the kingdom he had won to the Raja of Bengal. The stone was then used to carve the image of Durga Mahishasuramardini, who had slain the asura king Mahishasura.
Worship and Significance
Shila Mata is worshipped as the lineage deity (kul deity) of the Rajput family of Jaipur. The temple is particularly significant during the winter Navratris, when special prayers are offered to the goddess on the sixth day. The temple draws large crowds during this festival, with devotees flocking to seek the blessings of Shila Mata.
