In a moment of pride for Rajasthan, Devmali Village, nestled in the Masuda subdivision of Ajmer district, has been declared the Best Tourism Village in India for 2024. The announcement was made on Thursday evening, and the official award ceremony will take place in Delhi on November 27, 2024.

Organized by the Ministry of Tourism, this prestigious competition recognized villages that not only promote tourism but also preserve their cultural heritage, traditions, and social structure. Devmali stood out among the many entries and clinched the top position.

Unique Features of Devmali Village

What makes Devmali truly special is its sacred connection with Lord Devanarayan, the revered deity of the Gurjar community. Remarkably, around 3,000 bighas of land in the village is recorded in the name of Lord Devanarayan. Because of this, villagers do not hold individual land ownership titles—making it a land of spiritual sanctity.

At the heart of the village is the famous Devanarayan Temple, which attracts lakhs of devotees annually. The religious and cultural significance of this temple makes Devmali a prime spot for spiritual tourism.

Documentary That Brought Recognition

A documentary highlighting Devmali’s rural charm and cultural traditions played a key role in securing the award. Created under the direction of then Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bharat Raj Gurjar and launched by District Collector Utsav Kaushal, the film was submitted to the Ministry of Tourism in January 2024. It showcased the village’s unique lifestyle, tourism potential, and devotion to preserving its heritage—earning it national recognition.

A Glimpse into Traditional Living

Located amidst the Aravalli hills, Devmali boasts a landscape that harmonizes natural beauty with traditional rural life. All homes are still made of mud and traditional materials, with Keelu (terracotta tiles) used for roofing. Use of kerosene and neem wood is banned, and the residents abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian food, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and simplicity.

Despite their modest homes, villagers enjoy modern amenities inside. However, they follow an age-old religious vow—only Lord Devanarayan resides in a permanent structure, while the villagers live in raw mud houses. Only government buildings and temples are allowed to be constructed using cement and concrete.

Tourism Potential and Visitor Experience

Devmali offers a rare blend of eco-tourism, cultural immersion, and spiritual exploration. Tourists are fascinated by its earthy homes, clean air, and the people’s dedication to environment-friendly living.

The Devanarayan Temple is the central spiritual attraction, but the entire village, with its peaceful ambiance and religious traditions, provides a refreshing retreat for urban dwellers seeking mental peace and cultural insights.

Interestingly, Devmali also served as a shooting location for Jolly LLB 3, adding cinematic appeal to its natural and cultural beauty.

A Model for Rural Tourism

Devmali’s recognition as the Best Tourism Village in India signifies not just its tourism potential but its exemplary preservation of traditional values in modern times. With increasing interest from national and international tourists, the village is poised to emerge as a model for rural and cultural tourism in India.

As India seeks sustainable and culturally rich tourism destinations, Devmali stands out as a shining example—where faith, tradition, and eco-consciousness coexist in harmony.
